You have to admit, a 42.195km marathon is a long way, right? Imagine running one at 87, after four hip replacements.
Aucklander Garth Barfoot set out to do just in New York on Monday (NZ time).
From the start at Staten Island to the finish at Manhattan, it was a slog for some, a party for others and somewhere amid this big crowd in the Big Apple was Barfoot - the oldest runner in one of the world's biggest marathons.
At his age, you'd be forgiven for asking him the simple questions - why and how?
"If I had a dollar for every person that asked me that today, I'd be quite rich," he laughed.
Barfoot insists the answer is a combination of pilates, good genes and reliable limbs.
"Good calf muscles, good knees and good ankles, so I'm not plagued by these problems when they start running."
This isn't the first time we've followed Barfoot, who is a well-known face at events back home. He's run a whopping 30 marathons and entered 20 Ironmans, taking up these arduous activities in his 50s, when he started worrying about what he'd do in retirement.
Barfoot didn't quite finish the New York event this time, pulling out after 30 kilometres, but it was still an admirable effort, sure to make his family proud, he thinks.
"Secretly, they must be or they'd divorce me," he laughs.
Not one of Barfoot's worries, as he prepares for some sightseeing over the next few days, and when he gets back to his Auckland retirement home, he'll be back pounding the pavement.
He might be closing on 90, but he's got a another summer of running ahead of him.
