Cricket: Blackcaps captain Tim Southee strikes early to dismiss Bangladesh, NZ begin batting response

Blackcaps skipper Tim Southee has needed just one delivery to wrap up the Bangladesh first innings, but the home side have their guests on the backfoot at lunch on day two of their opening test at Sylhet.

Openers Tom Latham and Devon Conway have both fallen in the morning session, leaving New Zealand at 78/2 at the break.

Resuming at 310/9, the Tigers sent their final two batters out to the crease, hoping to prolong their resistance, but they were quickly walking back to the pavilion, after Southee trapped tailender Shoriful Islam leg before wicket for 13, with no addition to the overnight score.

Umpire Ahsan Raza initially rejected the Kiwis' appeals, but when Southee called for a review, it was clearcut in the bowler's favour.

In relatively benign batting conditions, New Zealand began their response with Latham taking 10 runs - including two boundaries - off Shoriful, who is the only seamer in the Bangladesh attack.

Conway survived a spirited lbw appeal and review off Mehidy Hasan Miraz, but Bangladesh had to wait until the 13th over before breaking the opening partnership, with Latham caught at fine leg for 21, sweeping at spinner Taijul Islam.

Miraz finally got his man, when Conway was next to fall, playing an inside edge onto his pads and watching the close fielder snaffle a catch to his right, as New Zealand fell to 44/2.

Henry Nicholls did his part to discourage fielders lurking around the bat, viciously cutting a delivery into the foot of Zakir Hasan, who had to be wheeled off the field. The next over, Nicholls smoked Islam for six over long-on, as he and Kane Williamson saw New Zealand safely to lunch.
