Kiwi Ben Campbell has broken his Asian Tour duck with a maiden victory at the Hong Kong Open, outduelling former British Open champion Cam Smith in a dramatic finish.
The world No.635 was tied with Smith and Tahi Phachara Khongwatmai at 18 under par on the last hole. Smith parred, Khongwatmai bogeyed and Campbell birdied to snatch the spoils with a clutch put.
The real drama occurred two holes earlier, when outright leader Khongwatmai drove his tee shot into think trees and then put his second even further into trouble, before taking 20 minutes over his third - much to the disgust of his playing partners.
"He can't stand over this, can he?" Campbell protested. "He's broken these branches here... look at that, these just got broken."
Despite severely limited vision of his ball, Khongwatmai somehow chopped his third shot near the fairway and finished with a double-bogey six to lose his advantage over the field.
Campbell also accounted for former US Open champion Graeme McDowell (12th) and former US Masters Patrick Reed (15th) in the LIV-backed event.
"I was battling all day,” said Campbell. "I've had quite a few injuries and bulged discs in the back, and things like that, so I had to change the swing quite a bit, especially in the last 2-3 years.
"Throughout the year, I've had chances, but not been able to finish it off, so great to put that behind me now. Monkey's off the back now."
