Rugby: Black Ferns stick with winning formula for WXV1 finale against rivals England

  • 02/11/2023

The Black Ferns coaching group have stayed the course for their WXV1 finale against England at Mt Smart on Saturday.

Head coach Allan Bunting and his staff have made just one change to the team that crushed Wales last weekend, with flanker Alana Bremner starting on the blindside, as Layla Sae moves to the bench.

The contest doubles as a rematch of last year's nailbiting World Cup final at Eden Park, where New Zealand held on to win an instant classic and defend their world crown.

This weekend's NZ squad features 11 players who contested that match with some notable absentees, including retired Kendra Cocksedge, sevens stars Portia Woodman, Stacey Fluhler, Theresa Fitzpatrick and Sarah Hirini, and injured winger Ayesha Leti-I'iga.

Nine of those 11 players are in the starting XV on Saturday and two on the bench.

Bunting says he's pleased with the development his side have shown through the competition so far, but is adamant they have another gear yet to reach.

"We are exceptionally proud of our wāhine and their work ethic across this campaign," he said. "Last weekend, as coaches, it was fulfilling seeing our team adjust the way we wanted to play and our wāhine unleashed what we know is us.

"We have a group of talented wāhine who can go another level. Selection is always tough, continuity this week is important around our selection.

"Everyone is doing an amazing job at preparing the team that will take the field.

Despite last year's final result, England are still ranked the world's No.1 test side, above second-placed New Zealand. The Black Ferns will have a chance to leapfrog their northern rivals with a convincing win this weekend.

"We know England will be an awesome challenge for our group at this stage of our journey," Bunting added.

"England women's rugby is in its sixth year of being professional, and it shows how they play together as a whole and thrive off their set piece. We are looking forward to this contest and great opportunity to test our depth."
