The New Zealand men's curling team decided to head to Canada to hone their skills against the best in the world - but they needed somewhere to live.
An offer came in from a very unexpected place.
They came to Canada on the smell of an oily rag, completly self-funded, so they needed accommodation, preferably cheap. They were scraping the bottom of the barrell, but a fortuitous Facebook post landed them at a retirement home at Calgary, Alberta.
"The knowledge base of curling here is absolutely crazy," Brett Sargon told The Project. "Even people here who haven't curled before, they know what curling is for a start.
"A lot of time back home, we have to explain what curling is."
For just a couple of bucks to cover utilities, the team get shelter, presumably complete with handrails, and the residents get to hang out with some young fellas, even following them to tournaments.
They're there for just four months... but at this rate, they may just stick around.
