Former Blackcaps allrounder Corey Anderson has played a significant cameo role in his Big Bash League debut, but couldn't prevent Hobart Hurricanes falling to Sydney Sixers by six wickets in their season opener.
The two-time runners-up won the toss and opted to bat first, but were quickly in trouble at 69/5 in the ninth over - including three wickets in eight balls - despite a whirlwind 42 runs off 24 balls from opener Caleb Jewell.
Thrust into an unfamiliar role, Anderson was obliged to tone down his usual swashbuckling approach, as the Hurricanes battled to survive their 20 overs.
His 17 runs off 27 balls featured only one boundary - a far cry from his finest moment in black, when he 14 sixes in a one-day international against West Indies in 2014.
Chasing a paltry 135/8, Sydney were always in control with the bat, as Daniel Hughes anchored their pursuit with 60 runs off 50 balls.
Anderson was the only Hobart bowler to strike more than once, with opener Josh Philippe caught at backward and Moises Henriques at midoff.
He also had the finger raised on dangerman Hughes, caught behind by wicketkeeper Matthew Wade, but Anderson immediately rejected the decision, and a review showed the ball missing bat and hitting back leg.
The Sixers remain unbeaten after their opening two games of the season, while Hobart will seek their first win against defending champions Perth Scorchers on December 20.
Hobart Hurricanes 135/8 (Jewell 42, Anderson 17; Curran 3/19) Sydney Sixers 139/4 (Hughes 60; Anderson 2/10)
