A late goalkeeping blunder has seen Wellington Phoenix fall to a 2-1 defeat in their A-League Women clash with Adelaide United at Marden Sport Complex on Saturday.
In the 85th minute, Phoenix goalkeeper mistimed her jump to stop a relatively harmless cross from a free kick from United's Nanako Sasaki and succeeded only in palming the ball into her own net, handing the hosts their first win of the season.
It was a brutal way to finish for Foster, who had been one of the most impressive players on the pitch for the Phoenix.
The visitors squandered multiple opportunities to put the contest away in the first half, after Emma Main had opened the scoring with a clinical finish in the 21st minute.
Main latched on to a through ball from Macey Fraser, before streaking 10m clear and slotting a low shot past Adelaide goalkeeper Annalee Grove.
In the 75th minute, Foster did well to come to the edge of her box to deny Chelsie Dawber, before Emily Condon pounced on the rebound and fired into a virtually empty net.
"It was one of those games where we saw the best and the worst of us I think,” Phoenix head coach Paul Temple said post-match.
"I think we were fantastic in the first half, created enough clear opportunities to probably win two games of football. We obviously didn’t take those opportunities which was disappointing because our play probably deserved them. We should have been out of sight really.
"We wanted to do the same in the second half and obviously play the same way, but we got tested. They came out and got into us a lot more and pressed us, and we just could not find our passing rhythm at all."
The result means the Phoenix fall one spot to fourth in the competition standings.
They'll return to Wellington to host Newcastle Jets at Sky Stadium on Saturday.
