Olympic cycling gold-medal hope Campbell Stewart is being carefull monitored, after a horror crash on the opening stage put him out of the Tour de Hongrie road race.
Stewart, 25, and Aaron Gate are considered strong contenders in the two-man madison event at Paris, and the track star is nursing bumps and grazes - but apparently no breaks - after hitting the deck with 100 metres left on the sprint into the Hungarian town of Hajduszoboszlo.
The Kiwi was the first rider down, but his tumble had a domino affect on the rest of the peloton, as Aussie Sam Welsford raced away for the stage win.
Stewart's Jayco-AlUla team announced he was "up and conscious and on his way to hospital for precautionary checks".
"Thankfully X-rays confirm no broken bones for Campbell Stewart, but a large number of superficial wounds, some of which require stitching. Campbell will take some time now to rest and continue tobe monitored by our medical team."
Latvian Emils Liepins was relegated to last place for causing the crash, as he cut across Stewart's path and clipped his front wheel. Dane Sebastian Changizi was next to go down, as he rode over the top of Stewart, and his bike took several other riders down in the melee.
Hungarian Gergo Orosz was hospitalised for facial wounds.
Stewart is a former omnium world champion and took silver in the allround event at the Tokyo Olympics. He was a Commonwealth Games team pursuit gold medallist at Birmingham 2022, and won bronze in madison and team pursuit at last year's world championships at Glasgow.
