Blackcaps bowler Tim Southee has been handed an official reprimand from the ICC for smashing a hand-sanitiser dispenser after his dismissal in the Blackcaps loss to the West Indies on Thursday.

The incident breached the ICC's code of conduct that relates to the "abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an international match".

Southee admitted the offence and has had one demerit point added to his disciplinary record.

The fast bowler was not banned because it was his first offence in a two-year period.

The incident occurred when Southee was dismissed by Alzarri Joseph for a first-ball duck in the 18th over of New Zealand's chase. He then smashed the dispenser on his way back to the dressing room.

Today's news is the latest drama during what has been a difficult campaign for both Southee and the Blackcaps.

After just two games New Zealand have already been eliminated from the tournament, and they also suffered their first international defeat to Afghanistan in their opening match.

Coach Gary Stead says they are now playing for "pride" in their final two pool matches, the first of which is against Uganda on Saturday.
