Kiwi Scott Dixon has risen to the IndyCar championship lead, with victory around the streets of Detroit.
Starting fifth on the grid, Dixon needed only two pit stops, as most of his rivals took four, driving a flawless tactical race for his second victory of the season and back-to-back podiums, after finishing third at last week's Indianapolis 500.
"The team called it perfectly," said Dixon. "We were on the right strategy.
"We won, man. How cool is that?
"It's just always the variables. Trying to stay out of trouble, trying to keep your car on track, we had rain... it was all over the shop out there.
"You had no idea how the transitions were going to fall or even the strategy, so stoked for everyone on the team. That was cool."
The six-time champion finished almost a second clear of Swede Marcus Ericsson, with Kiwi protege Marcus Armstrong achieving his first IndyCar podium in third.
Dixon, 43, now has 58 career wins to his name, just nine short of AJ Foyt's all-time record. This is his third success at the 'Motor City'.
After starting sixth on the grid, Scott McLaughlin was an early casualty, spinning into the wall on the 33rd lap, but able to rejoin the race a lap down to finish 20th.
The result gives Dixon an 18-point lead atop the championship table, ahead of Spaniard Alex Palou, with Aussie Will Power another 13 back.
IndyCar heads to Wisconsin next week, before Dixon crosses the Atlantic to contest the iconic 24 hours of Le Mans.
