NZ Warriors star Shaun Johnson has responded to social media trolls, after news that he will spend at least on the sidelines, rehabbing a troublesome Achilles tendon injury that has plagued him all season.
After falling one vote short of the prestigious Dally M Medal - the NRL's Most Valuable Player award - last season, the veteran half has struggled for form during the current campaign and has been closed down for at least a month in the hope he can make a full recovery.
The move comes amid questions over his place in the Warriors line-up, which broke a four-game losing streak and reeled off three wins in a row, with Johnson nursing a shoulder injury. Since his return, they have lost twice, including a record-equalling debacle against bottom-of-the-table Gold Coast Titans.
In his absence, Te Maire Martin and Chanel Harris-Tavita combined effecitvely in the halves, and will now renew that partnership on Saturday against Brisbane Broncos.
Johnson, 33, has been a popular scapegoat for disgruntled fans throughout his career, but has hit back at the latest round of criticism on Instagram.
"Just like you, I see the comments and, damn, some of you are savage," he posted. "If you're one of those who find comfort in slamming others online, I hope everything is OK.
"Your words don't carry weight this time around, but they could for the next person you choose to spew your negativity on. Think before you type.
"On the other hand, to those who have checked in or sent a message, I appreciate you. Perspective is key, I'm at a stage where 80min doesn't define me like it once did.
"Still get to live a pretty cool life with the best people in it.
"Short ball Johnson won't be on the field for a bit. I'm frustrated, but will be doing everything to get back to the level I know I can."
His comments have resonated with the NRL community, with teammates and opponents alike posting messages of support.
Warriors coach Andrew Webster insists the string of injuries has undermined Johnson's form this season, but twice has had to defend his player at media conferences since the Titans defeat.
"One-hundred percent unfair," he said. "Sixty-six points conceded and everyone's talking about Shaun...
"Come on, did everyone not see how bad everyone tackled on the weekend? He wasn't great at that either, but the whole team was terrible.
"I think it's unfair."
The club's all-time top pointscorer is currently on a one-year contract and is considering his playing future past this season. Johnson has indicated he will either extend with the Warriors or retire.
