The industry has been in the spotlight after three dogs died in a week.
Darfield trainer John McInerney pleaded guilty after one of his dogs tested positive for methamphetamine and another was mistreated.
But animal welfare groups say the penalty is "weak" as he'll continue to make money despite the disqualification.
The race comes less than a month after a damning report which found the industry was unviable in its current form.
"This is not just greyhounds and it's not just New Zealand... adoption numbers just globally are down."
But a call on whether the sport will be banned in New Zealand likely won't happen until after the election in October.
Four dogs broke their legs, and other dogs had injuries ranging from sprains to lacerations.
