The road is blocked and motorists should avoid the area.
Police said one person died at the scene while another was transported to hospital in a stable condition.
Police said in a statement they were called to the crash in Whakarewarewa at about 5:05am.
"Motorists are advised to take an alternate route, as the road is expected to be closed for some time."
Perumal Dinakaran, 23, died after his car collided with a truck while driving to work.
Diversions remain in place at either end of Titri Rd.
Enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.
Another person is seriously injured.
Four people are hospitalised with injuries ranging from moderate to critical.
