A man who removed a whale fossil from a riverbank at Little Wanganui on the West Coast has apologised for his actions.
Police said enquiries into the removal of the fossil are ongoing and no charges have been laid at this stage.
"It's a great thing to show people and shouldn't be touched."
"This was no place to go for a swim."
The animal is thought to resemble a badger although much of its skeleton was described as "outlandish".
