The number of people forced into modern forms of slavery has risen by a fifth in recent years to around 50 million on any given day.
It comes as the Government introduces new laws to prevent slavery and exploitation.
The minister in charge admits New Zealand needs to follow other countries already doing it.
One figure says legislation is a "long time coming".
