Xiaomi has announced its Mi Mix Fold, a device it says "touts the largest foldable display on any smartphone to date".
The Chinese tech company's first folding phone's inner screen will boast an 8.01-inch 4:3 display, while its external screen is 6.52-inch 27:9 display.
Smartphones with expandable screens are still not mainstream, but are a growing part of the market, with notable offerings from the likes of Samsung, Oppo and Huawei.
Xiaomi says the Mi Mix Fold is also up to 27 percent lighter than other foldable phones already being sold.
Building on the move to add stereo speakers to smartphones, the Mi Mix Fold promises to be the world's first with quad speakers.
"Using Xiaomi's own quad-speaker array algorithm, the device can realise 3D spatial audio field playback, which builds an additional sound dimension on top of the foundational dual speakers, creating a true 3D spatial audio listening experience," the company says.
Pre-orders for the Mi Mix Fold opened in China today with prices starting at 9999 Chinese Yuan (about NZ$2180 at the time of publishing), ahead of the device shipping on April 16.
Currently, the phone will only be sold to the Chinese domestic market, but Xiaomi will look to expand it internationally in the future, potentially to markets including New Zealand.
