Social media platforms Facebook and Instagram were briefly down on Friday morning.
Thousands of people from around the world reported issues with the websites, which are both owned by Facebook Inc. They were down for roughly 20 minutes before coming back online.
"Earlier today, a configuration change caused Facebook services to be unavailable to some people," said a spokesperson for the company.
"We quickly investigated and resolved the issue. We apologise for any inconvenience."
Website DownDetector showed a spike in reports about Facebook being down at 9:20am (NZ time). About 74 percent of complaints suggested a "total blackout", while 20 percent of people had issues with logging in and 5 percent said they have an issue with the application.
Among those who reported an outage were people from the United States, Denmark, Mexico, Poland, El Salvador, New Zealand and Japan.
Facebook showed an error message saying: "Sorry, something went wrong. We're working on it and we'll get it fixed as soon as we can."
