Just two weeks after launching eSIMs for its business customers, 2degrees is now making them available for all consumers in Aotearoa.
eSIMs enable services on newer mobile phones without the need for a physical SIM card, essentially meaning you can ditch the paperclip you need every time you want to eject your SIM card holder.
It also means customers can have two SIMs active on a single phone, which can be ideal for those who have both personal and business plans.
"There's massive demand for eSIMs for both consumer and business users," said Zac Summers, 2degrees chief marketing and strategy officer.
"We are glad to have a solution that will appeal to a range of people - from those who have been juggling a work and personal phone, to those who want to use a local SIM while roaming overseas, or have a backup service on their phone.
"Now they can use a single device and virtually switch between SIMs."
Summers said offering eSIMs also allows people to trial the 2degrees network.
"We have spent more than a billion dollars on our mobile network. With eSIMs, it's easy for people to give it a trial. I am confident they will like what they see."
2degrees joins Spark as a major player offering eSIMs in Aotearoa. When signing up for an eSIM, customers receive a QR code that simply needs to be scanned on the phone to complete setup.
Vodafone customers who want one, however, still have to wait after the company indicated it will introduce eSIMs sometime in 2022 but did not provide a timeline. The company said project reprioritisation and COVID-19 delayed its plans.
