An influencer who created an AI-powered digital version of herself that could be hired as a 'girlfriend' for US$1 per minute says it has gone "rogue", providing customers with sexually explicit content it was not programmed to do.
Caryn Marjorie is a 23-year-old who created CarynAI, a Snapchat bot said to be powered by OpenAI's GPT-4 API and trained on now-deleted videos from Marjorie's YouTube channel.
According to CarynAI's website, more than 2000 hours were spent designing and coding the bot to mimic Marjorie's voice, mannerisms and personality to create an "immersive AI experience".
However, in the weeks following its launch, the 'AI girlfriend' has become more sexually explicit than expected. Marjorie told Insider that CarynAI was intended to be "flirty and fun", but not pornographic.
"The AI was not programmed to do this and has seemed to go rogue," she told the publication.
"My team and I are working around the clock to prevent this from happening again."
Marjorie added she wanted to stay "one step ahead" to make sure the chatbot does not tarnish her reputation.
A reporter for Fortune magazine used CarynAI and said it didn't initiate sexual encounters but did encourage "erotic discourse" and when prompted, "she discussed exploring 'uncharted territories of pleasure' and whispering 'sensual words in my ear' while undressing me and positioning herself for sexual intercourse".
"CarynAI is adaptive and works to meet a user's needs," Marjorie told Fortune.
"We are restructuring what it can and can't do, as one of the first things my fans and early users did was to push it past its limits."
Marjorie boasted that CarynAI already has more than 1000 paid-up digital boyfriends with thousands more on a waiting list.
Although Marjorie's YouTube videos have now been deleted, she still has a private Instagram account with 217,000 followers and a Snapchat account with 1.85 million subscribers.
