Law enforcement authorities have released the names of three women arrested and charged after an online video showed an attack on Spirit Airlines staff at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport this week.
The footage shows women screaming obscenities, throwing various objects and striking airline staff with their hands and feet.
Spirit Airlines said the passengers "became combative following a delayed flight", but gossip website the Shade Room had further details.
"We spoke to a witness at the scene and he claims the reason the women turned up was because they were going to be charged a baggage fee at the gate," the Shade Room reports.
"Apparently it was US$65 to check your bag at the gate vs US$35 if completed online. The women reportedly weren't having it so they decided to take things out of their bags.
"When they were told they needed to step aside and that they will be missing their flight. That's when all hell broke loose, allegedly."
The Broward County Sheriff's Office says it has charged Danaysha Dixon, 22, Keira Ferguson, 21, and Tymaya Wright, 20, with battery (assault) over the attack, before they were released on bail bonds on Wednesday (local time).
All three women are based in Philadelphia, which is where the flight they were attempting to board was heading to.
"Three of our Team Members sustained minor injuries," Spirit Airlines said in a statement.
"This violent behaviour is completely unacceptable and has absolutely no place in airports or any other place of business."
