Located near Albany in Western Australia, the ironically named 'Misery Beach' has just been named the Best Beach in Australia, according to Tourism Australia's beach ambassador and pioneer for the conservation of oceans Brad Farmer.
Misery Beach, in Western Australia's South West region, is described as a peaceful, secluded, sandy beach with views of King George Sound and its rugged coast and islands.
Some reports say the name of the beach comes from its close proximity to an old whaling station. The blood and teeth of whales were often dumped on the beach until the operation closed down in 1978.
There are 10,654 mainland beaches in Australia, and 11,761 in total.
Only 16 percent of those are accessible by conventional road, a further 12 percent via unsealed roads.
Four-wheel drives are needed to get to 29 percent of them, and 43 percent are totally inaccessible.
