Starting later this year, people arriving into Aotearoa will need to complete an online New Zealand Traveller Declaration instead of filling out a paper arrival card.
The declaration was first introduced in March of last year amid the pandemic to ensure arrivals were adhering to the Government's COVID-19 rules, but was abandoned in October when restrictions were lifted.
Although the online system was designed to simplify journeys to New Zealand, travellers complained of glitches and delays with it in its first few months of use.
Now travellers are advised to keep an eye on the declaration website to see how it will "evolve" this year.
"The New Zealand Traveller Declaration will be reintroduced in the middle of 2023 and will replace the paper Passenger Arrival Card," the website states.
"Customs NZ is working with other border agencies, including the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, Biosecurity New Zealand, the Ministry of Health, and the Ministry of Transport, to modernise our border. This will help travellers move through our airports and improve the safety and security of New Zealand.
"This year, we will be getting feedback from travellers and airlines on new features and improvements to the New Zealand Traveller Declaration, as we get ready for it to be reintroduced."
The online system is expected to be active as a replacement for the paper system by June. When it is, people arriving into New Zealand will need to have completed the declaration by the time they report to a Customs NZ officer, as is currently the case with the paper arrival cards.
