A Qantas flight from Auckland to Sydney has landed safely following a mayday call over an issue with one of its engines.
A Qantas spokesperson told Newshub flight QF144 experienced an issue with one of its engines about an hour out from Sydney.
In line with standard procedure, the plane was met by emergency services.
"While a mayday was initially issued, this has now been downgraded to a PAN ('possible assistance needed')," the Qantas spokesperson said.
The flight landed at Sydney Airport at about 3:30pm (local time).
"The 145 passengers onboard disembarked the aircraft normally. While inflight engine shutdowns are rare, and would naturally be concerning for passengers, our pilots are trained to manage them safely and aircraft are designed to fly for an extended period on one engine," the Qantas spokesperson added.
Passengers told 7News they heard some disruptions during the flight, but they couldn't tell what caused it.
"I just heard a bang, and maybe a slight shudder, but that was it," one person told the outlet. "They were so professional about it and so calm about it."
Another passenger said: "I noticed something, but it wasn't really recognisable."
The plane was delayed at Auckland Airport by 36 minutes before it took off for Sydney, 7News reported.
A spokesperson for Sydney Airport confirmed to 7News emergency service crews had been deployed as a "precaution."
The Guardian reported flight radar data showed the plane had lost altitude and speed less than an hour after taking off.
