An Australian teenager has been slapped with a fine by Jetstar despite her desperate measures to avoid the airline's baggage fee.

Adriana Ocampo, 19, was flying from Melbourne to her hometown Adelaide after a trip with her friend Emily Altamura, also 19.

But Ocampo told South West News Service her luggage was over Jetstar's 7kg carry-on limit and she could "barely close" her bag in the hotel room.

Ocampo and Altamura said they had hopes they would get to the airport and the weight of their bags wouldn't be checked.

"When we went to board [the plane], we saw them pulling out a trolley with a scale," Ocampo said.

So the duo mustered up a plan in an attempt to avoid paying more for her excess baggage.

"We thought the only way we can take the weight off our bags is if we put it on ourselves so we started putting on jackets and coats."

But Ocampo said after the first attempt to layer on her clothes, her bag was still overweight, so she continued.

Video shared on social media shows Ocampo in fits of laughter as she puts layers upon layers of clothes on herself.

"As well as the layers of jackets and jumpers, I had baggy trousers on and I was stuffing T-shirts and my iPad in them. I had about six layers on and stuff in my pockets."

At the end of her cheap exercise, Ocampo said her bag was left with only a "couple things" in it.

"I looked like a bear. I'm small and petite but I looked like the exact opposite."

But the pair's attempts to escape the fine didn't fly with Jetstar and they were forced to pay the $65AUD ($69NZD) fine and had to endure their 80-minute flight bulging with clothes.

"Everyone in line was staring at us and laughing at us, it was kind of embarrassing," Ocampo said.

"People were annoyed we were holding up the plane."

News.com.au reports Jetstar found the "funny side" of the ordeal, but said the airline does "have limits to carry-on to make it fair for everyone".

"Keeping track of how much baggage passenger bring on board means everyone has room for their belongings and we're meeting our safety requirements."
