Passengers at Wellington Airport are facing a New Year's Eve headache with dozens of flights in and out of the Capital delayed or cancelled due to strong winds.
Wellington Airport told Newshub that "extremely high and gusty wind" is causing disruptions at the airport on Sunday morning.
A Wellington Airport spokesperson said as of 10:30am there have been 17 arrival flights disrupted - either cancelled or unable to land - and 15 departures disrupted.
The spokesperson said some smaller aircraft have been able to land but it is the larger planes that are most affected.
"The wind is forecast to ease this afternoon. Passengers are advised to contact their airlines for the latest information," the spokesperson said.
The flights to and from Christchurch, Auckland, Queenstown and Hamilton have been cancelled while flights from Napier and Rotorua are also cancelled.
It comes as MetService has issued an orange strong wind warning for Wellington until 2pm on Sunday.
The forecasting agency said severe gale northwesterlies gusting 120 km/h are expected in exposed places.
