An engine issue has forced a Shanghai-bound Air New Zealand Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner flight to return to Auckland.
The flight departed Auckland last night and had just passed over the Solomon Islands when it turned and headed for home.
Air New Zealand chief operating officer Alex Marren confirmed the issue onboard.
"[The flight] returned to Auckland this morning as a proactive safety measure due to one of the aircraft's engines using more oil than usual."
"The decision was made to return to Auckland so the aircraft could be checked by our engineering team here."
Air NZ said the aircraft landed safely at 8:36am and passengers will be helped to get on the next available flight.
