The worst fire in over a century has killed at least three people and hospitalised many more.

Gatlinburg has been worst affected as the fire has spread from mountains in the Great Smoky National Park to the resort town.

Around 14,000 residents have been evacuated.

There are serious concerns for residents as fierce flames are burn along one of the main roads out of town.

It is estimated 12 separate fires are burning in and around the area.

So far it's believed 30 buildings have been destroyed in the fire including a 16-storey hotel.

Gatlinburg Fire Chief Gregory Miller says it has been a difficult fight.

"The situations are absolutely dangerous. They're dangerous for our fire fighters, they are dangerous for our residents and they are dangerous for our visitors.

"If you are a person that prays, we could use your prayers."
