A North Korean missile launch on Tuesday was of a liquid-fuelled Scud missile which only travelled a fraction of its range, US officials said.
Initially, the US military said North Korea had tested a KN-15 medium-range ballistic missile.
"We are now certain it was a liquid-fuelled Scud," said a senior White House official, speaking on the condition of anonymity.
"It spun out of control after going only a fraction of its range."
US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson issued an unusually short statement in response to the test.
"North Korea launched yet another intermediate range ballistic missile. The United States has spoken enough about North Korea. We have no further comment.
