A British criminal on the run for assault contacted police to complain about his mugshot.

Wayne Esmonde, 35, had a photo of his face shared on South Wales Police's Facebook page, after an alleged assault.

Writing on their Facebook page, he asked police to remove his photo because it was "unflattering", the BBC reported.

"I am him. Not a very flattering mugshot. I'd appreciate it if you'd take this post down. Innocent until proven guilty and all that," Esmonde wrote.

"I've spoken to my solicitor and they will advise me what to do next. Thanks."

The photo shows Esmonde with a shaved head staring intensely into the camera.

The AM Show's UK correspondent Adam Gilchrist told Newshub the photo shows him "looking a bit wild and weird and scary, frankly - he's got these wild eyes".

The Facebook post worked though - Esmonde later handed himself in at Swansea Central police station.
