A masked bandit has been released by Colorado Springs police after it tried to flag down an officer.

Officer Christopher Frabbiele was on his way to a serious accident when he was disturbed by a raccoon which "ended up" on his car's windscreen.

The adventurous animal was unharmed and once Mr Frabbiele pulled over, quickly make his escape.

A police spokesperson said raccoon hitchhikers are "not a common occurrence".

While a raccoon leaping onto a police vehicle may not be common, they are common in Colorado Springs.

According to local media, they're usually found in basements, attics and crawl spaces, if not lurking outdoors.
