A tourist couple in Portugal have paid the ultimate price for attempting to take a selfie.
The Australian and British couple were found dead at the bottom of a 30-metre wall overlooking Pescadores Beach in the town of Ericeira, a 45-minute drive from the capital of Lisbon, the Daily Mail reported.
They were discovered Tuesday morning by a beach cleaner. Police say they fell between 1am and 6am.
A rescue spokesperson told the Daily Mail evidence suggested they were probably trying to take a selfie when they fell.
"It seems they dropped their mobile phone and fell down while leaning over to retrieve it," he said.
A spokesperson with Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it was providing consular assistance to the family of the deceased Australian.
"The department has been in contact with the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office regarding the other person who died in the incident. Owing to our privacy obligations we will not provide further comment."
The beach is a popular surfing town on Portugal's west coast and many tourists take pictures by the enormous coastal wall.
