British outraged at being told to stay home during heatwave

The British are well known around the world for whinging and talking almost exclusively about the weather, and this week they had the opportunity to combine their two favourite pastimes.

The UK - a country not exactly known for its hot weather - is currently basking in a heatwave, and Brits have been advised to stay indoors to avoid the sweltering temperatures.

The advice came from the British Met Office, which came under fire on Monday for spoiling the fun in the summer sun.

The British public were told not to leave the house until Friday as it had become dangerously hot.

Monday was the hottest day of what has been a scorching summer for the UK, with temperatures hitting 33degC.

The Met Office put out an official advisory, but was roasted on social media for being too much of a "nanny state" organisation.

Millions of Brits ignored the advice and headed to the beach, while hundreds of others took to Twitter to voice their displeasure.

The country is at an amber, or level-three, warning - one step away from a level-four warning, which would put the country into a state of emergency.
