A child in the US has suffered chemical burns from wearing light up Sketchers sneakers, his mother says.

Sherry Foster shared pictures to Facebook of her son's blistered feet.

In the post she says "Peyton has 2nd degree chemical burns from his sketcher lightable shoes."

"Apparently when they get wet, the batteries release a chemical causing children's feet to burn," it read.

Ms Foster thanked her Doctor, Dr Jordon for treating her son. Her post has been shared over 500,000 times.

A Sketchers statement sent to Romper said "footwear products are rigorously tested for safety" and that it "has sold millions of pairs of children's lighted footwear worldwide and has not had one incident of chemical burns reported."
