The 19-year-old charged with the murders of three members of a New Zealand family in their Perth home rambled incoherently in court on Monday.
A 48-year-old mother and her eight-year-old son were found dead, while her 15-year-old daughter died on the way to hospital.
Police were called to a convenience store near the home at around 1:30am on Sunday (local time), after Teancum Petersen-Crofts told the shop keeper to call emergency services.
When officers arrived he directed them to the home where they made the gruesome discovery. A homicide detective said it was potentially the most horrific crime scene he'd ever been called to.
A pair of scissors was found in a bush close to the home and taken away for forensic testing.
A neighbour said he heard "screaming and yelling and a bit of fighting" coming from the area before police arrived.
Petersen-Crofts is believed to be related to the victims.
In court on Monday, he appeared to break down, raving incoherently before being sent to a hospital.
He repeatedly referred to an unknown person as a "criminal", claiming a man punched him in the head.
"I left because I was that scared he was going to kill me," he was heard saying. "Mama told me to save myself."
A GoFundMe page has been created for the extended family, who friends say can't afford the funerals.
A tribute on the page described the mother as a loving person.
"She was always good to me, always supported me and always made me feel like a better person."
In comments on the page, people sent their deepest condolences to the family, saying they will be sadly missed.
Peterson-Crofts will be appear in court again next week.
