Police in New York have responded to a woman climbing up the Statue of Liberty.

Live footage shows the woman climbing up to the base of the statue on Wednesday (local time) the Fourth of July - Independence Day in the United States.

The woman declared that she won't come down until "all the children are released," a source with the New York Police Department told CNN - referring to the Trump administration's controversial "zero tolerance" border policy towards illegal immigrants.

Liberty Island has been evacuated, according to the Associated Press.

An eyewitness to the event said on Twitter a New York Police Department helicopter has been watching the person "very carefully".

The woman climbed up the statue shortly after several people were arrested for hanging a banner from the statue's pedestal calling for the abolishment of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The banner read 'Abolish ICE' according to National Park Service spokesman Jerry Willis.

Mr Willis told CBS people on Liberty Island were being taken to neighboring Ellis Island, Battery Park in New York City or Liberty State Park in New Jersey.

CBS footage showed police extending a ladder up the statue to reach the person who sat in a corner by the statue's foot.

The Statue of Liberty is a neoclassical sculpture on Liberty Island in New York Harbour in New York City, in the United States.
