Julie Bishop resigns after failed leadership bid

Julie Bishop has resigned from cabinet after failing to win the Liberal party's leadership spill.

The Foreign Affairs Minister threw her hat in the ring alongside Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton and Treasurer Scott Morrison, who went on to win the party room vote and unseat Malcolm Turnbull as Australian Prime Minister.

Ms Bishop won only 11 votes out of a possible 85, and received no votes from her home state of Western Australia.

In a statement released on Sunday (local time), she said she would resign as Minister for Foreign Affairs but remain on the backbench.

"I have been preselected by the Liberal party for the seat of Curtin and I have made no decision regarding the next election," she says.

Ms Bishop is rumoured to be the country's next Governor General as General Sir Peter Cosgrove's commission will expire in March 2019.

She served as deputy leader of the Liberal party for 11 years, and as Foreign Affairs Minister since 2013.
