A female eagle ray at an aquarium in Sydney has given birth despite not seeing a male in nine years.

11 year old ray Freckle gave birth to Annie by asexual birth - meaning she was not impregnated by a male eagle ray.

The rare process involves an unfertilised egg developing into an embryo.

"We don't know what triggers this," Libby Eyre, a senior aquarist at Sea Life Sydney Aquarium, said.

"The animals are normally sexually reproducing. But for some reason its switched to asexual reproduction. And then we come up with little Annie here."

Freckle lives in a tank with six other eagle rays.
