A toothbrush company has apologised after referring to oral sex on material distributed to university students.

Toothbrush company Brushbox produced beer mats referring to whether you "spit or swallow", with a highly sexualised image of a woman's mouth.

Distributed to the University of Sussex's student union, the beer mats received a damning response from students as well as academics, who said they highlighted how women were often turned into sex objects.

Gender expert Raquel Rosario Sanchez said in the current #MeToo era, it highlighted the on-going sexism still in play, reported BBC.

"It's saying you are still going to be seen as a sex object, regardless of you getting into university on the basis of your achievements, and people can still see you as an oral sex joke," she said.

A spokesperson for the university said they understood why the promotional material for Brushbox's toothbrushes garnered such a strong reaction.

Brushbox and Dig-In, which distributed the product, have since apologised, while the student union said it did not condone the material.
