Trump Tower board sues man who died in fire

The Trump Organization is suing the dead victim of a fire for almost US$90,000 over unpaid property and legal fees.

Todd Brassner, 67, died in a fire in his apartment on the 50th floor of New York's Trump Tower in April.

The residential board of Trump Tower Condominium has filed a lawsuit against his estate, the Washington Post reports.

Mr Brassner owned a multimillion-dollar art collection and vintage instruments. According to the lawsuit, filed with the help of attorneys from the Trump Organization, Mr Brassner owes US$64,640.34 in unpaid building fees and an additional US$25,000 in legal fees.

The suit claims Mr Brassner defaulted on his building fees in 2015, and filed for bankruptcy later that year.

Mr Brassner's apartment was not fitted with a sprinkler at the time of the fire. In the 1990s, now-US President Donald Trump lobbied against installing sprinklers in the building.

The New York Times reported that it did however contain smoke sensors, which alerted fire crews to the blaze.

When Mr Brassner died in April, the President did not tweet condolences - but did falsely claim on Twitter that the fire had been put out, before it actually had been.

"Fire at Mr Trump Tower is out," he tweeted.

"Very confined (well-built building). Firemen (and women) did a great job. THANK YOU!"

Mr Trump and his family were not in the building at the time of the blaze.
