A vintage bottle of 1945 Romanee-Conti has returned a staggering US$558,000 (NZ$857,000) at auction in New York.
The auction house had an estimate of $32,000 for the French wine.
The previous record for a bottle of wine was a $310,700 three-litre bottle of 1945 Mouton-Rothschild which sold in 2007.
Just minutes after the new record-breaking sale was made, another bottle of 1945 Romanee-Conti went for $496,000.
The bottles were one of 600 produced in 1945.
Romanee-Conti is considered to be the best Burgundy wine, and is produced in the Cote de Nuits region in a space less than four acres in size.
