An Indian doctor reportedly called police to ask for protection after killing a mother and baby during a botched Caesarean.
Dr PJ Lakhani feared retaliation from the woman's family, reports BBC News, but when police arrived they discovered why he'd failed so badly - he was drunk.
The 22-year-old patient reportedly arrived at Sonavala Hospital on Monday night, experiencing labour pains. During the delivery the baby died, local media reported, and efforts to get the bleeding mother to another hospital were in vain.
That's when police received a call from a panicked Dr Lakhani, asking for help.
"We found that he was drunk when we arrived so we arrested him," an officer told BBC News.
Dr Lakhani was a senior doctor at the government-run hospital with 15 years' experience.
He has not been charged yet, with police awaiting the outcome of a hospital investigation and post mortem to determine if his intoxication contributed to the pair's deaths, the The Times of India reports.
