Waterspouts are intense columnar vortexes of water and air that form over large bodies of water when there is condensation in the clouds.
According to the United States National Ocean Service, they can be extremely dangerous and should not be investigated.
Tornadic waterspouts can be just as dangerous as land tornadoes, with the potential to cause significant damage if they move onshore.
On Tuesday, a waterspout was spotted off the shore of Auckland's Takapuna beach, adding to a wild week of weather across New Zealand.
