Abortions in Ireland will be legal from January 1st, and they will be free of charge.

In May, the public voted to legalise abortion and the change was signed into law on September 18.

A draft proposal for the new law made the procedure free, but has stipulations that some people who are not covered by state healthcare may have to pay for associated drugs such as painkillers and antibiotics.

Irish Health Minister Simon Harris told the Irish Examiner "I don't want cost to be a barrier".

Making the procedure free of charge is aimed at making sure it is accessible and women are not forced to travel outside of Ireland to get abortions.

Mr Harris described the repeal of the law as "an extraordinarily historic day".

Two thirds of voters ticked 'yes' in the referendum to repeal the Eighth Amendment, bringing Ireland's abortion laws on a par with the rest of the European Union.

However, Northern Ireland still has a near total ban on the procedure.

GPs in Ireland have been issued with interim guidelines on performing abortions, which will be legal up to the 12th week of pregnancy.

Abortions any later than this must provide proof of a fatal foetal abnormality or serious risk to the mother.
