A British driver who swerved to 'avoid an octopus' before crashing his vehicle in a ditch has been arrested on suspicion of drug-driving.

Police were called to a highway between Malborough and South Milton in Devon, UK, at around 5:30pm on Tuesday (local time).

The vehicle was found upside down in a ditch, The BBC reports.

The driver claims he swerved off the road to avoiding hitting an octopus. However police found no evidence that an octopus was on the road.

The 49-year-old was uninjured in the crash and was checked by paramedics before being arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit through drugs and drink.

He has been released under investigation pending further police inquiries.
