The bullet struck young Millie in the head.
"Detectives determined that the four- year-old male sibling retrieved a handgun from the console of the vehicle and accidently discharged it, striking his six-year-old sister in the head, fatally wounding her," the Paulding County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.
After being rushed to an Atlanta area hospital in a critical condition, Kelly passed away two days later and donated her organs.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to support the Kelly family, which also asks people to "go and love others as Millie does".
"Smile a Millie size smile and hug someone with all you got!" the page says.
While police decided not to press any charges related to the death, they issued a public warning around gun safety.
"We want to remind everyone to keep their firearms unloaded and secured in an area away from children to ensure that this never happens again."
