Austrian activists protest New Zealand oil drilling plans

Climate activists in Austria are showing solidarity with their New Zealand counterparts by protesting oil giant OMV.

On Wednesday Greenpeace activists staged an oil spill outside the Vienna headquarters of OMV ahead of its plans to drill off the coast of New Zealand.

They were accompanied by Maori climate activists and iwi leader Mike Smith.

Last week, Smith announced he will file a communication against OMV CEO Rainer Steele at the International Criminal Court, for the company's part in driving climate change.

OMV is on the list of the 100 companies responsible for 70 percent of the world's climate change emissions.

It follows protests in New Zealand about OMV's plan to drill 12 wells off the coast of Taranaki this summer.

"This movement has been noticed internationally and has ignited similar action in OMV's home country of Austria, where the company is today being told to stop exploring for oil in New Zealand," said Greenpeace New Zealand climate campaigner Amanda Larsson.

Austrian activists support New Zealand's protest action.

"We are in the midst of a climate emergency," said Lukas Meus from Greenpeace Austria.

"If we want to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees in line with science and protect low-lying coastal communities from catastrophic sea level rise, then we need to end the search for new oil and gas reserves today," he said.
