Pentagon releases drone footage of raid that killed Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi

The Pentagon has released footage of the raid that killed Islamic State (IS) leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

The declassified video and images were released on Wednesday (local time) and show US troops firing at militants on the ground at the compound where Baghdadi was hiding.

Baghdadi fled the attack by running into a tunnel, before detonating a suicide vest filled with explosives.

Two children also died in the attack, the head of US Central Command General Kenneth McKenzie said.

McKenzie said the IS leader had been confirmed dead through DNA samples found at the scene.

In announcing Baghdadi's death, President Donald Trump said the leader was "whimpering and crying" as he died, but McKenzie told reporters he could not confirm that.

"He crawled into a hole with two small children and blew himself up while his people stayed on the ground," the general said at a press conference. "You can deduce what kind of person it is based on that activity."

It was initially reported that three children had died with Baghdadi, but McKenzie corrected that, saying it was actually two. He also said Baghdadi may have shot at US forces from the compound.

In announcing the IS leader's death, Trump said watching the raid from the White House's Situation Room felt "as though you were watching a movie".

He said Baghdadi had been under surveillance for several weeks before the raid.

Baghdadi's death came just weeks after Trump ordered the US military to pull out of northern Syria, a move which paved the way for Turkey to launch an offensive in the area.
