A couple searching for a missing cat have been accused of trying to steal the wrong pet.

Sophie Johnson’s beloved cat Lentils went missing in Prestonpans, Edinburgh around October 20.

After Johnson posted on Facebook, couple Lauren Faulkner and Charlie Allan took to the streets to find the one-year-old Ragdoll/Siamese mix.

After discovering a ragdoll in the local area they messaged Johnson ‘MATE, WE’VE F*CKING GOT HIM,’.

However, the couple were approached by a local who told them they had the wrong cat.

"Just so you know, that’s not the right cat, he’s been living here for about a year. I’ve heard about the missing cat but I can point you in the direction of the owner’s house if you want."

Faulkner told the news site UniLad, "She was lovely, we were having a laugh about it because I was mortified."

However, the reaction prompted the owners of the nearly abducted cat Railey to write a disgruntled post on the facebook page Athena Grange Prestopans accusing the couple of trying to steal their pet.

Sophie replied "I haven’t tried to steal someone’s cat and neither has anyone else. It was a case of that people had thought it was Lentil they stayed in that area and as soon as it was confirmed it wasn’t the cat they left that area. Actually so annoyed that people who are actually trying to do a good turn for me are being called appalling and being accused of trying to steal a cat which is ABSOLUTELY not the case. Literally a drama queen by the looks of it 😴"
