Australia's bushfires are far larger than other bushfires in recent history.
In New South Wales (NSW) alone, over four million hectares of land have been burned.
In Victoria, a million hectares have been ravaged.
Another million have been decimated in the rest of Australia.
In total, roughly six million hectares have been destroyed, an area roughly half the size of the North Island.
In 2019, fires in the Amazon Rainforest - widely described as the 'Lungs of the World' - burned 900,000 hectares.
In 2018, 800,000 hectares were burned in the deadly California Camp Fire that killed 85 people.
The most infamous Australian fire was on Black Saturday in 2009. The blaze killed 173 people and destroyed 450,000 hectares.
