Coca-Cola will not stop using single-use plastic bottles because consumers still want them, the company says.

"Customers like them because they reseal and are lightweight," Bea Perez, head of the firm's sustainability, told the BBC.

Perez said the firm could not ditch plastic outright because this could alienate customers and hit sales.

Last year, Coca-Cola was named the world's number-one plastic waste polluter for the second year in a row, according to an audit conducted by Break Free From Plastic.

As part of the firm's 'World Without Waste' campaign, it has pledged to recycle one bottle or can to every one sold.

But environmental advocates are adamant that Coke bottles will still end up in a landfill.

Coca-Cola produces about three million tonnes of plastic packaging each year.
